Orvieto
Orvieto is magnificent from any angle. Perched on a 300m plateau, it looks down from its cliff-edged balcony over a vineyard-spotted plain.
Visitors flood into the town to admire the Duomo, among the greatest of all Italy's Romanesque-Gothic cathedrals.
The tiny 13th century church of San Lorenzo in Arari is at the end of Via Scalza. Its walls feature frescoes describing the martydom of St. Lawrence, who was grilled to death. The altar is made from an Etruscan sacrificial slab.
Via Malabranca leads to San Giovenale at Orvieto's western tip, a church that is beautifully and almost completely covered in detailed frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries.
It offers broad views over the surronding countryside.
