Assisi
This beautiful medieval town, with its geranium-hung street, lovely views and fountain-splashed piazzas, is heir to the legacy of St. Francis (1181-1226), who is buried in the Basilica di San Francesco.
Piazza del Comune, Assisi's main square, is dominated by the colums of the Tempio di Minerva, an almost perfectly preserved Roman temple-front from the Augustan age.
The Palazzo Comunale, opposite is home to the Pinacoteca Comunale, an art gallery with works by local medieval artists.
The Duomo (San Rufino) built during the 12th and 13th centuries, has a superb Romanesque facade. Inside is a small museum of paintings, and there are archaeological items in the crypt.
