Ortisei is the prosperous main resort for the pretty Val Gardena and Alpe di Siusi region, and a major centre for woodcarving; good examples of local craftmanship may be seen in shops in the town, in the Museo della Val Gardena (which also focuses on local archaeology but is currently closed for renovation), and in the church of St.Ulrich.
The best way to explore the area is by cableway from Ortisei: visitors with a head for heights can climb the 2518m. (8260ft.) high Monte Saceda, where a sign-posted 30 minute walk leads to the Odle group of Dolomites.
