it was founded in the 11th century but considerably extended in the 13th, and now clings to the flank of the valley, offering far-reaching views.
the castle is being restored but remains open so that visitors can watch the work in progress.
among the numerous frescoes with secular themes is a rare series in the casa delle guardie (the sentry house) depicting 13th century battle scenes.
