leaning tower
campanile, a bell tower, either freestanding or attached to a church building, derived from campana (italian, "bell"). probably the world's most famous campanile is the leaning tower of pisa (1174-1350), the freestanding tuscan romanesque bell tower of pisa cathedral. the cylindrical eight-story, 56-m (185-ft) building began to tilt during its construction because of weak foundations, for which the builders tried to compensate by stacking the upper stories in a curve against the tilt.
the campanile of florence cathedral, a slim, freestanding gothic tower 82 m (269 ft) tall, is renowned for its beauty. it was begun by the florentine artist giotto in 1334 and completed by his compatriot francesco talenti in the mid-14th century. its seven stories are faced with richly colored marbles and with bas-reliefs by giotto, andrea pisano, and luca della robbia. a notable 20th-century campanile, designed by the hungarian-american architect marcel breuer in 1967 for saint john's abbey church in collegeville, minnesota, is a high, freestanding slab on splayed piers; the bells are hung in variously sized spaces that pierce the slab.
