| Foggia |
Foggia, is at the centre of the Tavoliere plain, at the convergence of the major communicationroutes that link the south of Italy to the north and the Adriatic sea to the Tyrrenhian. Thanks to its favourable geographic position, Foggia,in the 12th century already an active agricultural market (exporting wool, livestock and wheat), has expanded greatly as a commercial centre. Every year (since the 13th century) a farming and livestock fair is held here that is the most important market of this sector in southern Italy. It is also a busy industrial centre (paper, metallurgical, and mechanical, textile and food processing sectors). Its Mediaeval origin is bound to the not distant Arpi, an ancient Apulian town that was destroyed by the the Saracens: its inhabitants moved to a place called Santa Maria de Fovea which, around 1069, started to be Known as Foggia. |
