latina
founded in 1932, and known at that time as littoria, latina is the southernmost provincial capital of the lazio region. the town, situated in the center of a vast - and subsequently drained - marshland, is laid out along a precise street plan: its straight roads branch out from the center in an octagonal pattern. its principal monuments were created during the fascist era and the interventions it has undergone since the war have not always been successful, with the development of a sizable industrial complex and extensive building along the coastline.
the lakes and lagoons strung out along the coastal strip remind the visitor of how the territory once looked. the circeo national park was created in 1934 with the aim of preserving its unique natural characteristics. in 1981 the island of zannone, part of the ponza archipelago, was annexed to the park and the waters around the island declared a protected area. the entire coastal strip of the province, a busy tourist destination during the summer, has numerous famous beaches and seaside towns: sabaudia, san felice circeo (a town on the circeo promontory, which owes its name to the sorceress circe, whose profile the mountain is said to resemble), terracina, and sperlonga.
latina and its hinterland are also famous for their delicious buffalo-milk mozzarella.
