Things to see - Islands
Burano
A small island ten kilometers from the city, famous for its artistic handmade lace.
Giudecca This island faces the canal of the same name, opposite the Zattere shore.
Rising among small streets and green spaces is the huge Church of the Redeemer, planned by Palladio and finished only after his death, at the end of the sixteenth century.
Lido of Venice
An exclusive tourist and residential center located on an island southeast of Venice, the Lido (the word means beach) has bathing establishments, the casino, and the cinema palace where the International Film Festival takes place each year.
Murano
This group of five islands, accessible by vaporetto, is noted throughout the world for its glass industry.
Here one can visit the Glassworks Museum and the Romanesque church of SS. Maria and Donato.
San Giorgio Maggiore Island
Beside the Giudecca, opposite the Schiavoni shore, one finds the island San Giorgio Maggiore.
The S. Giorgio Church, one of the major works of the Palladium, is located here.
Torcello
On the little island of Torcello we find a seventh-century cathedral, the Romanesque church of S. Fosca, and the archaeological museum containing artifacts from the lagoons.
