How to arrive in Milan and Public trasportation
By plane
Milan has two principal airports: Milan Linate and Milan Malpensa. Budget flights from the UK also use Milan Bergamo Airport, further away from Milan.
Milan Malpensa Airport
Malpensa is the principal airport for Milan, serving airlines and flights from all around the world. A fast rail service, the half-hourly Malpensa Express train, connects the airport to Cadorna Stazione Nord in Milan. A ticket costs €9, and the journey takes 50 minutes.
There is also a direct shuttle bus service every 20 minutes from Malpensa to Stazione Centrale (Piazza Luigi di Savoia). The journey takes around an hour, and costs around €5. Also stops at the Fiera upon request. Milan Linate Airport
Linate is the closest airport to the centre of Milan. The airport is mostly used for domestic and European flights. From Linate an efficient coach service runs directly to Piazza Luigi di Savoia, next to Stazione Centrale. The bus runs every 30 minutes during the day, the journey takes 30 minutes and costs €2. An even cheaper alternative is to take the standard urban ATM bus to Piazza San Babila in the centre (buy your ticket from a machine or news-stand before getting on the bus). This runs every twenty minutes until midnight.
Milan Bergamo Airport
Milan Bergamo Airport is at some distance from Milan. However, the airport is used by budget airlines for cheap flights from the UK. Bergamo is also a holiday destination in its own right;
Once in Milan, you can use the efficient Metro system to take you to your final destination. Public transport in Milan.
By train
A hub for Europe's major railway lines, Milan offers train travelers direct connections with the rest of Italy and with Europe's most important cities: from the central station in Piazza Duca d'Aosta, Intercity and Eurostar trains leave daily. Other smaller stations are: Porta Garibaldi, Milan North, Porta Genova and Porta Vittoria.
Public transportation in Milan
The Azienda Trasporti Milanesi operates within the metropolitan area, managing a public transport network consisting of three metropolitan railway lines and 120 tram, trolley-bus and bus lines. Overall the network covers nearly 1400 kms reaching 86 municipalities. Besides public transport, ATM manages the interchange parking lots and the on-street parking spaces in the historical centre and in the commercial zones using the SostaMilano parking card system.
Timetables and line routes are shown at all ATM stops. In the metropolitan railway stations, panels have been installed showing passengers the destination and the waiting time for the next train.
The same information will be given at the main stops on the surface, where electronic indicators are being tested.
In the Milan area an integrated fare system called SITAM (Sistema Integrato Tariffario Area Milanese - Milan Area Integrated Fare System) enables users to travel with a single ticket or pass on all urban and suburban ATM lines, the interurban routes run by other transport authorities and some sections of the State Railways and Nothern Railways.
The SITAM, adopted by ATM in 1970, was extended to the lines managed by other companies in 1990 according to the Regional Law 44/89. ATM offers various kinds of tickets and passes, designed to satisfy the specific requirements of principal passenger groups (students, workers, tourists, the elderly, occasional users).
The city of Milan has entrusted ATM with the management of the interconnection parking-lots (capacity 14,000 cars) and parking areas in the centre of the town and in several commercial zones, through the SostaMilano system. ATM, thus increases its role in the mobility field by assisting in traffic restriction and regulation. |
