Column of Marcus Aurelius (Piazza Colonna)
Raised between 180 and 196 near the present piazza, it celebrated the victories of the emperor Marcus Aurelius over the Sarmati, the Quadi and the Marcomanni.
It is in spiral form, with 190 internal steps, in Lunese marble, decorated by a circular frieze whose reliefs, though less refined than those of Trajan's Column, are still very effective likenesses.
At the top of the column was the statue of Marcus Aurelius, substituted in 1588 by that of Saint Paul. |
