the university of bologna
the university of bologna, founded in 1088, is the oldest university in europe and one of the most highly regarded academic institutions in italy. computer science teaching and research within the department of mathematics is carried out in the laboratory for computer science (lcs), which was established in 1987.
lcs staff include 5 full professors, 7 associate professors and 6 research associates. starting with the 1994-95 academic year, lcs has initiated a 4-year graduate program leading to a phd degree in addition to the existing 5-year undergraduate program. a proposal for the creation of a department of computer science has been formally approved and will become effective within the first half of 1995.
the principal research areas within the laboratory include distributed systems, fault tolerance, real-time and multimedia systems, performance and dependability evaluation, distributed simulation, languages for coordination, formal specification of software systems, semantics of concurrency, type theory, logics and foundations of computation. laboratory members are actively involved in several national and european research projects including broadcast, coordination, confer (basic research projects) and cabernet (network of excellence).
