The wines of the Northeast
The wines of the Northeast

The Veneto produces large quantities of everyday wines, red, white, and rosè (chiaretto).
When choosing an unknown white, you might select a Bianco di Custoza rather then an anonymous Soave.
But don't rule out Soave; there are some fine examples, notably by Pieropan and Anselmi. The best whites from the northeast come from Friuli, where winemakers Puiatti, Shioppetto , Jermann and Gravner excel in their craft .
Trentino-Alto Adige too, produces some crisp whites. Much light and fruity red wine is produced near Bardolino and Valpolicella, with some outstanding bottles coming from Allegrini and Masi.
Recioto della alpolicella is a rich, sweet dessert wine, while Recioto Amarone is less sweet, but stronger still.

· Bianco di Custoza: is a dry white "super Soave" from the eastern shores of Lake Garda. Good white wine producers in the veneto region include Pieropan, Anselmi, Maculan, Tedeschi, Allegrini and Cavalchina.
· Prosecco: is the Venet's own sparkling wine, and a delighful aperitivo. It may be secco (dry) or amabile (medium-sweet).
· Collio pinot Bianco: is a superb, fragrant white wine made in the Collio hills next to the Slovenian border. Puiatti is a top producer.
· Pieropan: produces some of Soave's finest quality wine. The single-vineyard wines from this renowned estate are excellent.
