Otranto (15m. 5114 inhab.), the area occupied today is but a part of what was the ancient Hydruntum. The historical center, surronded by walls, stands on the south shore of the port, while the new town has expanded inland. A greek and then Roman town, in the Middle Ages it was one of the most important towns of Byzantine domain in Italy, thanks to the position of its port, a point of embarkation for the orient. The road is beautiful here, unwinding along an undulating coastal terrace edged with vineyards and olive groves. |
