Ostuni (207 m, 33 551 inhab.), a town standing on three hills at the edge of the Murgia dei Trulli. The Mediaeval village called Rione Terra is on the highest of the three hills and surrounded by Aragonese ramparts. It has an egg-shaped streets, archivolts, outside staircases and whitewashed houses. Its origin is uncertain, some believe it dates from the Messapian Stulnium, others ascribe it to the Mediaeval Astunium, which would derive from Astuneon, new town. |
