Gallipoli (12m. 20.090 inhab.), the town is set on a headland and a small island which extend 3 Km. into the Ionian sea. The Citta', the ancient centre, occupies the limestone island with narrow, winding streets enclosed within a scenic road (the riviere)opening onto the site of the ancient walls. A seven span bridge, constructed in 1603, joins the island to the headland, and the Borgo, the modern district, started in 1837. |
