Brindisi
|
Brindisi, town on the Adriatic coast, is situated at the back of a funnel-shaped bay, divided into two semi-circular arms called Seno di Levante and Seno di Ponente; this unusual shape makes the bay look like a deer's head, which very probably explains the origin of the town's Greek name: Brentèsion, which means "deer head". The port, linked with the sea via the Canale Pigonati is also protected by a group of small islands (Isola di Sant'Andrea, Isole Pedagne). In modern times the development of the economy of Brindisi has been marked by expanding industry, mainly the petrochemical (plastics), pharmaceutical and, to a lesser degree, hydroelectric and metallurgical and mechanical sectors. The port is very busy and now specialised in passenger transport. The modern development of Brindisi started in 1865 with the inauguration of the railway station, but only after 1950 did the town experience an exceptional population and topographical growth. Most of the offices and shops are still in the old centre. |
