Sagra "du pupu" - Castelmezzano (PZ)

 E’ un caratteristico paese accerchiato dalle guglie e dai picchi delle meravigliose Dolomiti Lucane, vi si arriva attraversando una spettacolare galleria scavata nell’arenaria, dopo aver superato una gola panoramica.
Il centro abitato agli inizi del secolo IX fu posseduta dai Saraceni, successivamente fu distrutto dai Longobardi e ricostruito dai Normanni. In epoca feudale è appartenuta a diverse famiglie feudatarie.
Una leggenda narra che un pastore di nome Paolino, avesse qui trovato i migliori pascoli e protezione dagli attacchi esterni per le sue mandrie.
Ancora oggi esiste, nella zona est delle Dolomiti, la "Rampa Paolino".
Tra le manifestazioni,molto importante è la Sagra "du pupu" o "mais lessato".
Il mais è un cereale e costituisce il seme Zea mays, pianta erbacea annua della famiglia delle Graminacee.
È di originario dell'America centro-meridionale ed il suo nome è di origine arauca (maiz).
Viene chiamato anche: granturco o granoturco, granone, formentone, formentazzo, frumentone, grano siciliano, melica o melega.
I semi delle diverse varietà sono usati per farne farina, crusca, per la fabbricazione di birra, per ricavarne olio, amido.
Il mais è usato anche nella fabbricazione di liquori.
In Italia si trovano quasi esclusivamente mais di tipo indurata (a granello in parte corneo e in parte farinoso).
Il mais fresco può essere cucinato ancora sulla pannocchia lessato o alla griglia.
I chicchi lessati possono essere serviti come insalata o contorno.
