Le origini del paese di Montemurro risalgono alla distruzione di Grumentum, quando i profughi di questa città cercarono riparo nel territorio della Val d'Agri.
Il nome sembra aver avuto origine da "Castrum Montis Murri", trasformato successivamente in Montemurro.
Il territorio è circondato da suggestivi boschi dove nel periodo autunnale si possono raccogliere castagne e varie specie di funghi.
Ha un'economia basata sull'agricoltura.
La coltura dell'olivo in Basilicata costituisce senza dubbio una tradizione storica, ma anche una pratica che ha influito non poco sull'economia e sulla gastronomia.
L'olivo è qui coltivato sin dai tempi della Magna Grecia.
L'olio di Montemurro è noto ai grandi ristoratori per i pregi gustativi e ai ricercatori universitari che ne hanno evidenziato le caratteristiche nutrizionali nella ricchezza di antiossidanti benefici per l'organismo, collocandolo tra i protagonisti della dieta mediterranea.
Perciò ogni anno viene data la possibilità di degustare ed acquistare l'olio "nuovo", dal sapore fresco e deciso, appena uscito dal frantoio mediante la Sagra dell'Olio.
Durante la manifestazione verranno serviti pranzi e cene con insoliti menù dedicati all’olio ai quali saranno abbinati vini di produzione locale.
