Venezia -
La chiesa più importante di Venezia fin dall'epoca paloeocristiana, divenuta la cattedrale della città nel 1807. Nell'edificio del IX secolo, di cui non rimane praticamente nulla, fu inumato il corpo dell'apostolo san Marco, trafugato dal suo sepolcro ad Alessandria e traslato a Venezia nell'828. Gravemente danneggiata da un incendio nel 976, la chiesa fu quasi completamente riedificata tra il 1050 e il 1090 circa. Come cappella privata dei dogi essa divenne centro delle cerimonie di stato e meta di pellegrinaggi. La pianta dell'edificio, molto probabilmente ricavata dalla chiesa degli Apostoli di Costantinopoli, è di chiara derivazione bizantina: a croce greca, presenta tre navate in corrispondenza di ogni braccio e archi a sostegno delle cinque cupole.....
